One of my favorite teachers, Mr. Rische, taught English, journalism, photography, history, and other
subjects at South High for more than two decades. He introduced me to the magic of photography in the
summer of 1968. Photography became my hobby and main interest for many
years. He also introduced me to journalism and helped me develop a good
writing style. I always enjoyed his good humor and ease with himself in
the classroom.
I put up a large poster in his G-3 classroom that said “Sensitometry
NOW!” as a joke, about 12 feet up, near the ceiling, where it couldn’t
be reached. Sensitometry is the science of photographic film
sensitivity. Most teachers would have such nonsense removed immediately,
but he allowed it to stay there for several weeks.
After Mr. Rische posted his name on the South High Alumni website
several years ago, I exchanged a few emails with him. Although I’m glad
that I did that, I regret that I didn’t have a chance to talk with him
in person.
